Sounds Like NYUAD - Programming, 2019
This game, originally coded in Python and later redeveloped in JavaScript, is an interactive map-based experience set on the New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) campus. Players control Falcon, the campus mascot, as they navigate a redrawn map to unlock sounds associated with various campus locations. Completing the game involves collecting all the sounds to finish the campus song.
Gameplay Mechanics
- Objective: Unlock each location’s sound to complete the song.
- Challenges:
- Hitting a cat results in losing the game.
- Running into a person makes the player lose time, symbolizing how students often get sidetracked by conversations with friends.
Design and Development
The game’s layout features a hand-drawn map of the NYUAD campus, which serves as the main interface. The transition from Python to JavaScript allowed for enhanced interactivity and smoother gameplay, especially in handling real-time interactions. This project was a further development of the Pop The Saadiyat Bubble project.
Reflection
This project merges creativity with technical skills, combining custom visual design with engaging gameplay. It was an exciting challenge to recreate campus life through a playful, musical lens, balancing simplicity with meaningful interactions. Future iterations could include more dynamic obstacles or multiplayer options to enhance the experience.
