I Was Censored By Myself - Audio Editing, 2021
Project Overview
This podcast explores the theme of censorship, focusing specifically on the concept of self-censorship. The project originated from a team discussion where we identified various forms of censorship—by social media, parents, school, and ourselves. Each team member chose an outlet that resonated most personally, and for me, the idea of self-censorship stood out as both intriguing and deeply reflective. Self-censorship raises compelling questions: How much have external forms of censorship influenced us to the point that we are no longer truly honest with ourselves? This thought became the foundation for the podcast, as I sought to unpack the layers of self-censorship and confront my own honesty in the process.
Creative Process
The initial vision for the podcast centered around interviews and responses. I planned to collect data by interviewing participants and gathering voice notes via an Instagram prompt asking, "Have you ever censored yourself? Why?" These contributions would have formed a compilation-style narrative with no single dominant voice. However, as I began collecting and analyzing responses, I realized that while they offered fascinating insights, they often only skimmed the surface of the subject. This gap inspired me to adapt the format, using the responses as a starting point while adding my own voice to explore and elaborate on the concept. The shift in approach was also a way to confront my own self-censorship and reflect honestly on my experiences, staying true to the podcast’s title and theme.
Reflection
This project became a journey not only into the concept of self-censorship but also into my own relationship with honesty and expression. Adapting the format from a compilation to a narration-driven structure allowed me to bridge the gap between others’ experiences and my own reflections, creating a more personal and introspective narrative. The process was both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to consider how deeply censorship—both external and internal—affects our ability to be authentic. While there’s always room to expand and dive deeper, this podcast represents an honest exploration of a topic that continues to shape how we navigate the world and ourselves.
