Behind The Mask - Virtual Exhibition, 2021

Behind the Mask is a virtual exhibition designed using Artsteps to archive handmade masks created during a workshop organized by Better Together, a mental health nonprofit. Participants were given a mask and paint, then encouraged to express their state of mind through art. The exhibition allows viewers to walk through a digital space, experiencing the masks and the personal stories behind them.

Concept and Design
The exhibition’s concept revolves around the idea of "masks" as both literal objects and metaphorical representations of how individuals hide their emotions. Each mask serves as a personal reflection of the creator’s mental state, providing insight into the often-hidden struggles people face. The virtual space was designed to allow users to navigate freely, interact with each mask, and connect with the emotion conveyed through the artwork.

Impact and Purpose
This project aimed to raise awareness about mental health by using art as a tool for expression and conversation. By displaying these personal creations, the exhibition helps break down stigma and encourages open dialogue about mental well-being.

Reflection
Creating Behind the Mask was a meaningful project, blending art, technology, and social impact. It highlighted the power of art in expressing complex emotions while also exploring how virtual spaces can be used to engage people in mental health discussions. Future iterations could include interactive storytelling or audio reflections to deepen the connection between viewers and the masks.
